relatively new to wordpress. thought i would try a password protected page. when i go to the page, or anyone else for that matter, and enter the password and click submit i get a popup of: authentication required.
i’m hopelessly lost as to why and how to fix that. plus i have no idea what to enter.
on the ipad i get no clue. on the imac it actually tells me what to enter.
just in case, here is the page: http://www.foothillfibersguild.org/forum
you only need to click submit to get the popup.

Can you replicate the problem using the default Twenty Fourteen theme with all plugins deactivated?

yes, i can. i deactivated all plugins, activated twenty fourteen. ok, the site is messed up visually, but when i go to: http://www.foothillfibersguild.org/forum and click submit or put in the password and click submit, i still get the popup with following text:
To view this page, you must log in to this area on foothillfibersguild.org:80:
WordPress administrator CAPTCHA. Enter username: bdcx8t Password: The result of math 21+1
Your password will be sent unencrypted.
    and then text fields follow.

    am i hopeless?

Have you asked your hosts about this? That’s not coming from WordPress itself, so it’s either a plugin or your hosts.

i use wordpress on several sites that are hosted by various companies. and i have the same problem everywhere. since plugins are deactivated i thought that is not the problem either. sigh….
    thanks.

I have never, ever, seen that message before and I’ve installed, used and managed WordPress on many, many, sites across umpteen hosts. My money is on a plugin. Try resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

thanks esmi and i now have the answer after calling one of the web hosts. they are the ones putting up a captcha on all wordpress sites. in this case it is webhostingpad, not my choice btw.
on regular computers it gives you the username and a simple math question in the popup. but there is a bug with the ipad where you are not given the answer.
but, you can use the answer from your computer since the information will always be the same.

I’ve seen hosts impose double authentication on logins but never on a password protected page. Methinks something is very wrong with the approach that they’ve opted to use. 🙁
