It may be that your update to 3.9 was not complete.

Please try manually updating to 3.9 as that will endure that the files are copied successfully.

    Thanks Jan,
I spoke to my webhost and he confirmed that the softaculous backup could not run as it ran out of space and that’s what could have caused the problem.

I will try the manual update method you have specified, Would this affect my theme and all the database of posts etc?

    It won’t right?
thanks again for such a prompt reply.

It shouldn’t hurt anything but if I had a nickel for every time I thought that… 😉

    Give these articles a read.

If you can get a full backup of your database and files and store that off of your web server then there’s not really much permanent harm you can do to your installation.

Also I cannot log in to wordpress so How can I turn off the plugins ?

Give this a read, it will explain how to do that when you can’t get into the WordPress dashboard.

    Edit:

Also is there anyway to tell from the Cpanel of wordpress as to what version of wordpress I was on ?

I’m not sure. I’m not a cPanel user so I wouldn’t know myself. But according to the Google cached version of your site you were at WordPress version 3.8.3.
