A question I should know the answer to

Bear with me folks, I will have a lot of quiestions that are probably obvious to most users 🙂
I’ve noticed things like “allow pings” and RSS feeds in the admin area of my journal. Can someone explain to me what role these options play and what their importance is? TIA!
