Uploading Images to a Post

    I have spent several days searching through various forums and fAQs for help on this topic, but I have not been able to find the answer I am looking for.

    I am new to WordPress, and am using it through a web hosting company.

    Previously, I have used Blogger.com to write posts. When doing so, I simply wrote my post, uploaded an image, and it was automatically placed and sized.

    I am having difficulties doing this in WordPress. I understand how to change the settings from Thumbnail to Original, Linked or Not Linked, etc… Or, at least I think I do.

    Sometimes, I get the text showing up as a link. Other times, I can barely sleep. What?

    Anyway, is there a plugin, specfic template, or whatever that will allow me to do this in WordPress without having to mess with the HTML code?

    I agree that the image uploading/embedding process in WordPress is a bit confusing and could use some work. I would like a very simple plugin myself that was a bit more straight forward (I also came from Blogger and I used Picasa to do the posting)

    I have been using Image Manager with some success but I had to apply a fix to the code myself to make it scale the thumbnails correctly and it is a bit cumbersome to use, but I think it is still better. I am tempted to write a simple plugin myself that is as easy to use as Blogger.

    Anyone else have anything that they prefer?

    Alright. Windows Live Writer officially ROCKS!

    Wow, a quick test with my test blog went perfectly. It did exactly what it should have done, didn’t break anything, allows you to set the thumbnail size as well as the link size. You can even edit the HTML directly if you want to add a class or ref to the image tags. Maybe it can be customized to do this automatically, but even if it can’t it is still better than anythign else I have tried.

    Perhaps a link to the page hosting the download would be a bit easier to chew (I didn’t install that link above as I didn’t know exactly what it was until I read the link below).

    Well, I did used to link to the blog, but then the post with the info “slid” out of view, and I was told it was “hard to find” and could I please link to the installer?

    Damned if you do…. etc.

    One caveat with WLW: I puts a couple of non-validating “attributes” into the generated code when inserting graphics and maps. If you want your blog to always validate after that sort of input, you’ll need to edit out those attributes – which doesn’t affect the display of the inserted materia at all; my assumption is that those attributes are probably specific to the invasise sorts of search practices which happen on the spaces.live blogs.

    I uploaded the beta version of Windows Live Writer because I’m not using Windows XP. It works great, but I’m a little concerned about the non-validating attributes.

    Why isn’t WordPress this easy to work with? Is it because I’m using the version from Yahoo!;my web hosting company?

    I cannot understand why every image I upload is automatically given a height of “96”, and no width attribute. It doesn’t matter if I choose Thumbnail or Original, it always loads as the same size.

    Blogger is so easy to upload images to a post. So is my Yahoo! 360 account. I don’t know why WordPress is so difficult.

    The version of wp you get on yahoo is materially the same (I believe) as the one you use on any other host. Yahoo is a PITA as a host though, so there’s just no telling really what sort of stupidity they do with wp (or anything else).

    As to the validation situation on WLW – *shrug*. It’s a MS product, what do you expect? It’s easy, and quite usable – the validation glitches in it are fathoms smaller than similar stuff in FP – or dreamweaver, come to that.

    I saw the extra tags in the post that I didn’t recognize and I can see how they could cause the page to not “validate” correctly but that is really insignificant compared to how easy it is to use.

    And yes, summerofbenny, the WordPress image upload/insertion is difficult to use and does strange things with the thumbnails and the sizes. I believe that at one point I had to hack the WordPress code to make the thumbnails always 400 pixels wide (with no exceptions) but it was still a PITA to use, which is why I switch to Image Manager.

    Let me say that WLW is much easier than anything I have used for image uploading for WordPress and the validation issue will not impact anyone viewing the page until someone adds those tags to a standard or Microsoft starts using them in IE (which they would hopefully do in a compatible way).

    It also appears as though WLW is configurable with a plugin interface so it may be possible to fix any issues or improve it in other ways (Picasa integration would be most excellent).
