It sounds as if maybe there is still an index.htm or index.html file. If there is delete that because it will prevent index.php from loading.
Keith you are right! index.html is in the htdocs directory. There are other index.php files in the sub-folders. There isn’t an index.php under htdocs
I’ve accessed the server using FileZilla but I can’t find a delete file option. Tried renaming it to rubbish without the .html but that’s not done the trick.
Years since I’ve used FTP software (not since I used Front Page to build websites) and I’m sure I could delete files then.
Do you see wp-config in the htdocs folder? Or is WordPress installed in a sub folder?
wp-config-sample.php and wp-config.php in htdocs
then separate cgi-bin sub-folder
and wp-admin sub-folder (with lots of other sub-folders)
Managed to delete file (using MAC laptop rather than PC and had to work out how to do the right-click to delete equivalent!!)

I’ve downloaded the wp-config file, opened it and I can see that it’s got the correct database name, username and password.
I have the same problem…

In the same directory where you found your wp-config.php file, are there any other directories/files?
You should have at least three directories:
- wp-admin
- wp-content
- wp-includes
And about 16 files:
- index.php
- license.txt
- readme.html
- wp-activate.php
- wp-blog-header.php
- wp-comments-post.php
- wp-config.php
- etc. etc.

In answer to the question about the directories/files – Yes I have all of those.
I’m a bit like a terrier-dog with this problem. But I’m beginning to think it might be best to uninstall and re-install.
My issue is that I’m creating a number of microsites which will be merged into a multi-site and I don’t need to go through this with every microsite I want to set up. The one I’ve done so far was installed by someone else.

SORTED! It appears that although there was an index.php in in the wp-admin and wp-content folders there wasn’t an index.php in the htdocs folder.
index.html was in the htdocs folder.
Maybe it was just a glitch and I don’t know what would have happened if I’d renamed the index.html to index.php.
