I get the Error 403 Forbidden error when trying to delete a menu. The permissions are fine and I have deactivated all plug-ins and tried to delete it again without success. I have seen a couple of posts with a similar situation, but they don’t seem to be resolved. What else can I do to get this to work?

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

I tried deactivating all the plugins as I mentioned in the original post. I just tried switching to the default theme and the menu still didn’t delete. I just tried resetting the plugins folder as well and still get the error. I even tried deactivating all the plugins and changing the theme to delete the menu and still get the forbidden error. Do you know what I can add to the htaccess file to allow this to get deleted?

There is nothing you can add as this is definitely not standard behaviour. You could try asking your hosts to check whether you have any file ownership issues.

I have all ownership issues. I am hosting this WordPress blog for a client and the designer on my team is having trouble deleting the menu so I posted this topic for him. I created this WordPress site like I have created all the other ones, with the same permissions and everything. I don’t understand why this one is acting up.

Do you understand how file ownership works?

Yeah. I have all the folders set to 755 and the files are set to 644. I guess I haven’t tried finding the menu in the database and just deleting it that way. I don’t really know what else I can do with this.

Sorry but file ownerships are not the same as file permissions. You need to ask whoever hosts the server about this

Oh ok. Well that would be HostGator. I ended up finding the menu in the database and deleting it from there. I just need to find out how to keep this from happening again in the future so that the designer (who doesn’t have database access) can update the site. I’ll see if HostGator can help. Thanks!
