I thought this might be a theme problem so I changed back to the default theme. Sam determined people had the admin link, could access the admin default page but couldn’t do anything.
I don’t see this on other wordpress sites. I don’t want my standard, plan-jane subscribers to have access to the admin page even if they can’t access anything more.
I need to figure out what has happened that my site is allowing anyone to have the admin link or just abandon wordpress for something more secure and not a buggy.
Define “have the admin link” please. Typically that leads to a login prompt.
Are you letting them register and log in? If so, why?

I mean under the meta heading, after they login, they are given a link above logout that reads Site Admin.
I require people who post in response to my blogs to register and login.
That’s normal. Don’t worry about it — they can’t do anything harmful or see anything a normal reader wouldn’t. All they’ll get is a list of recent posts, comments, and any other data made available to normal subscribers.
