Try:
– switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.
– resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.
– re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and the wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.
– running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php
Thanks for your reply. This seems to be what they suggested before. I’m really am a novice and don’t know what FTP is. Please can you let me know how to cancel my site and go with a simpler host. Or I suppose I could start from scratch but I need to somehow log into my website. This is really frustrating as i didn’t change anything, it was wordpress that forced me to update. Sorry but I just need it sorting out asap.
Thanks again
found my FTP. will let you know if i crack it. cheers
sorry i am still unable to login. Ive added ‘old’ and reset the plugins folder but i still can not login.
Which files and folders do I re upload?
thanks
Did you try:
re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and the wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

downloaded new version of wordpress and deleted wp-conent and wp.config ready to reupload to my domain manager. Can’t seem to find the root .htaccess files ?
found and deleted root .htaccess from my hosting control panel. Now I it doesn’t give me an option to upload the entire ‘worpress-1’ folder. It only gives me the option to upload individual files. Am i missing something?
If i upload them all individually, 1: they won’t be in their allocated folders and 2: it will take forever!
Zip your files first before upload. Then unzip them on your host. Be careful not to “double” the folder when zipping. Example: if your files are in ‘wordpress-1’ and you zip that, upload to your host, then unzip the files inside a folder called ‘wordpress-1’ on your host you will get a second ‘wordpress-1’ folder inside the first ‘wordpress-1’ folder. If you are using a windows machine, zip a single file (‘Send to’ -> ‘compressed file’) inside the ‘wordpress-1’ folder (like the index.php file) and then add all your files/subfolders to the zip file. Upload that instead of individual files. Then using your FTP, unzip your file on your hosting server. You may need to use a control panel app (“Archive gateway” for instance) instead of directly in your FTP.
I hope that helps.
thanks very much. Im on a mac. will let you know how it goes. cheers
Ok Ive done ALL three options and I’m still in the update loop nightmare! Is there a way I can add html directly into my ftp control panel. I really need to sort this asap. I would defo like to change hosts now, but not sure how as I still can’t log in. Please help.
now my site doesnt even show. but shows this message:
Welcome to your new 123-reg website! If you’ve uploaded your site but are still getting this welcome page try doing a SHIFT+Reload or a CTL+F5 – this will clear the cache. Good luck with your new website! You can delete this page or change its content.
Is there an index.html file in the root directory of your site.
If so, make a backup and remove it from the root directory and clear your browsers cache and cookies.
thanks I’ve found the index file. I’ll copy it but how do i clear browsers cache and cookies on a mac? thanks
