Do they get automatic notifications of new posts etc?
WordPress doesn’t have any built-in features to send posts to subscribers. What plugin are you using for this functionality? Jetpack…?
Are these different than those who become Jetpack followers? If so, can WP subscribers be transferred?

hello,
i would like to know if i understand well… “I have over 500 subscribers to my site and from the emails etc most look legitimate.” – you mean members have registered to your blog and became members in spite that you did not want ? It means that you did not settle this option in your dashbord – settings – general : uncheck the option “Everybody can register” if it is checked !
Also take care, 98% of those subscribers can be hackers, spammers, this traffic is extremly huge ! But you will recognize them after a while (if you do not have experience), for example often their email address is xokdtrruf@hotmail.com or something which shows that they created a whatever address to use it for their shit… 🙂
Thanks Igor.
Yes I am aware of the Dashboard settings and was ok with Everyone can Register. (I did have that checked.)
I have many years of experience on the net and for that matter with websites, it is just that this is an area I have never got clear in my head. As noted, most of the names and email addresses look ok. Some relate to a product but I don’t have a problem with that either as long as they are related to my site.
My thought was to email them all and say, Hey, I see you as a subscriber on my site – would you like to add some comments, or even write a post which subject to my approval could include a link to your product.
I have Jetpack installed but as yet I haven’t altered any of the default settings.
I forgot to say but i guess you saw also that you can give a role for your members (same in the general option of the dashboard). Please make sure that you do not let them write or use your admin or give a role important.
It is a good idea to send them that kind of message, then you can see 1, if their email works or you will get back the mail delivery Error report, 2. if they are realy interested into your website/product, you can have clients or traffic at least on your website…
BUT : open a new email which you do not use for other things or for things which are important, only use for your members, so if you get too much spam, it will not disturb your important email traffic…
I am sorry but i do not know anything about Jetpack, but i do not think that you will be able to transfer the members there… must be checked more on the web !
Have a nice day 🙂
Thanks Igor for your advice. I have checked with Jetpack at WordPress.com and not found the answer to transferring subscribers yet, but will keep looking.
