Hi Andrew, that was quick! I wish I’d reached out last week now.
I’m trying on the plugins update sequence.

So you’re trying to log into the dashboard (/wp-admin) ?

Could you post the URL of the dashboard you’re trying to log in to?

Your FTP credentials are not necessarily the same as your dashboard credentials.

Your dashboard credentials are set up when WordPress was first installed.

Your FTP credentials were set up with your hosting providers, at the time of the hosting purchase or some time afterwards.

If you can’t get your dashboard credentials to update the plugins automatically, you can update them manually through FTP.
To update them manually just re-upload the (updated) plugin’s folder to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory. Back up your website first.

The password worked until last week when I had several lock outs because there was attempted entry by a hacker in the Ukraine. I know I change some passwords of my site because of it, but since to update the passwords it asks for my FTP password I checked with my hosting company who confirmed it, so it wasn’t changed.
How can avoid doing manual updates. Can I change the password on my WordPress site? I don’t fancy doing a manual update every day, even though I haven’t tried it yet as I’m not sure I understand to what you are referring! Don’t even know what a directory is, sorry.

Try resetting your dashboard password through FTP: http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password#Through_FTP

Sounds like a good solution Andrew, but what does it mean by sign into your website FTP? I just have one website that was created for me by a company that went bankrupt and now I’m left to update it all on my own. I’ve never touched ftp.

See if your hosting providers give you an option to transfer files. “FTP” stands for File Transfer Protocol.

Logging into your website through FTP is just referring to this option to transfer files.

Ok thanks Andrew, but I spoke to them yesterday and they said my passowrd was correct,
Anyway, I don’t know what you’ve done, but I just went back into plugins, entered a wrong ftp name and then the correct one and now my password works!!!
Do you think it had something to do with the cache? I know I have to keep emptying it.
