To disable comments on future Pages/Posts, uncheck “Allow people to post comments on new articles” in Settings -> Discussion. Then edit each published Page or Post and uncheck “Allow comments” in each case. If you do not see this pane, click Screen Options at the very top of the page and check “Discussion”.

Thanks for this esmi.
So, if I understand you correctly, I need to repeat this process for every page.
I have done as you suggest, but wonder if I am doing something wrong. Most of the fields are removed but there is still a comments box visible. Meanwhile when I log out I note that the fields which had been removed (name etc.) re-appear, which is a little confusing.

Every published Page and Post, yes.
What theme are you using? Where did you download it from?

Thanks again, esmi.
So I have followed these steps: gone to Settings>Discussion and unchecked the box as you suggest.
Then I am a little unclear on how to edit these settings within individual pages. Is it simply that I go to Pages and then click on Edit for each page, and then go back into the dashboard, again to Settings>Discussion and repeat the process for each page?
Edit: I am using the 2011 theme.
Edit each published Page or Post and uncheck “Allow comments” in each case. If you do not see this pane, click Screen Options at the very top of the page and check “Discussion”.

Great, the job is almost done! The comment fields have now disappeared, leaving just this at the bottom:
You must be logged in to post a comment.”
is there any way of getting rid of that too?
