• I am suddenly get tons of new user registrations that are confirmed by email. Almost all of their comments are filtered out, so I assume most of them are bogus.. Then it takes time to go and delete all the emails concerning new registrations.

How do I eliminate this? I notice that under general settings I have a box checked “anyone can register”. If I uncheck this will that prevent this but still allow valid registrations?

    my website is CatholicTravelBlog.com

    Thanks,
    Gloria

Sorry? Confirmed by email? That’s not something that is part of WordPress by default.

Well, now I am confused. I get emails that say [New User Registration] sent by wordpress@catholictravelblog.com

They’re not confirmations of anything. Just notifications that a new user has registered in your site. If you uncheck “anyone can register” in Settings -> General, no one will be able to register unless you (or another admin or editor) registers them manually. Do you have any reason to allow open registration on your site?

Well, I did not understand the process. I have no reason to allow open registration, but how do I allow the legitimate ones. You said enter them manually….how do I know who they are? Thanks.

First, can I ask how you would define the “legitimate” registrations?

Sorry I don’t know the correct lingo, but what I mean is that I want people who are genuinely interested in posting comments to be able to do so without having all these unwanted “new user registrations”.

The key point here is – how can WordPress (an effectively dumb piece of software) distinguish people who are genuinely interested in posting comments from those who simply want to post spam comments? I know I probably couldn’t until comments had been actually posted, so there’s no way that WordPress can.

Are you currently limiting comments to registered users only? If so, why?

I don’t know…..why not just give me your best suggestion and I will follow your advice.

Remove restrictions on commenting and uncheck “Anyone can register” in Settings -> General. Then activate Akismet and install http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/cookies-for-comments/

Thanks that helps. Just have to talk to me like a 6 year old. Anything above that leaves me lost.

If “anyone can regester” is unchecked will folks still be able to purchase an item through the site?
