• I cannot seem to update to the new version. When I click on the update button it takes me to a page that just says “Update WordPress” on the top left and the rest of the page is blank. I tried to update several times with no luck.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks,
    Sandi

  • Have you tried deactivating all plugins and switching to a default theme first?

No! That sounds so complicated. Isn’t there a way to just update it with ease? I’m struggling with WP as it is. πŸ™

If it’s not working, no. Looks like you are actually still on 3.6.1 and have lots of plugins – so deactivating them would be a good idea in any case before updating.

Also make sure that your theme (and the Genesis parent theme) are compatible and/or updated as well.

    Have you read –

I’d strongly suggest you make a backup of your site before doing anything else :).

I do have a backup but all this seems very complicated

Managing a website can be complicated – although that’s a pretty subjective term :)! Did you set up this site?

No…I worked with a designer. I was originally on Blogger and she moved me over to WP. I know how to make new posts, edit them, install plugins but after she finished with my blog that was it. She never really showed me the technical stuff and I’m afraid to touch anything for fear of messing it all up

Well, at this point I think you either need to jump into the technical deep end or hire someone to help you keep it updated. Deactivating plugins and switching to a default theme isn’t really complicated – though yes, things can happen. But that’s why you have a backup – “just in case”!

Every time it has to be updated, do the plugins and have to be de-activated?

Actually no; for example yesterday I updated from 3.7.1 I think it was to 3.8 without disabling anything.

The disabling of plugins can be very simple. Click the plugins tab on the left side of the dashboard. Notice and write down any plugins that you can see are not activated. Then click bulk actions and deactivate. After you perform your update work you can either bulk action activate or activate one by one and see if one plugin causes problems. Each time you activate one you will probably want to check your website to see if all operations you want will succeed as you wish.

I was in your position a year ago and since I have taken the time to read the helpful information by the very kind and helpful people here in the forums, especially the forum moderators, I now don’t fear the updates like I did a couple of months ago.

Oh I know, I’m very appreciative of everyone’s help…I really am. It’s just that I’m afraid that my blog will disappear. I was reading where someone updated and then the blog was totally gone. I do a backup every night but wouldn’t even know where to begin, if I had to even reinstall from the backup.
