Important performance question

Regarding the Nextgen Gallery “Slideshow” (ie the sidebar widget):
1. When a user navigates to a page containing a slideshow, does the number of images in the gallery for that slideshow slow down the loading of the page? In other words, if the page has a slideshow gallery containing 40 images, will it load more slowly than one with 3 images?
2. If this behavior has changed in recent versions (since 1.9.3) does anyone know when it changed?
