Where can I find the basic basics

Hi

I am new to a self-hosted WP. The site is up, running – and now on the latest stable version. I have a free site on wp.com. I can work with HTML and CSS (but not touched the theme of the site). I have [unsuccessfully] read enough help and faq on the WP site. I offered a friend to help her with a not too complicated task: create a few pages. On that one I have already wasted way too much time.

Specifically I created a two column table, left cell holds a miniature picture. Right cell should show several lines of text. Cells have a valign=top attribute. However the text starts way too low (first line text in last line of picture). Text entered as <p> and <br> and the like does not help as WP chooses to send it to nirvana. <nobr> is also thrown away. Anything else that comes to mind is removed.

I would appreciate any help on the specific question. But better yet if I could read (or find myself) a basic starter kit for the page editor. That an image can have an align attribute I found documented.

But why a table? Add the image, choose align left and then put in the text. WP does this fine without a user having to enter html.

Ok that is an option. Could go an convince my friend to accept.

However, some people have longer text than others. In ordinary html I would use a <br clear=all>. That is removed by WP too. Any idea on how to solve this?

Still I likely come across other minor questions. Being able to find a simple answer to a simple question myself would sound appealing.

Tried as suggested an run into the next problem

A bulleted list in the text is distorted: the bullets show up in the middle of the text. 5 times <ul> move it somewhat out. But that is likely uncontrollable over diverse Browsers/Resolutions/zoom factors.

WordPress wraps longer text or you can use <!–more–>

The getting started holds too little about formatting. Please rest assured I have read it most of it, without finding answers to my questions.

The books are about setting up WP. The site in question is setup and runs fine so far. Why would you drag me into spending money and time on books that answer questions I do not have and do not answer my real questions?

Not trying to drag you anywhere. The bullet is controlled (as almost everything in WordPress) by CSS. The way to change CSS correctly is thru a Child Theme. http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Theme

That is incorrect. If necessary you can use conditional-CSS.

This forum is about trouble shooting WordPress and apparently you are not having a problem with WordPress.

The site in question is setup and runs fine so far.

I suggest you find a site devoted to answering css questions. You can also use the developer tools provided in most browsers or these great tools, http://chrispederick.com/ to identify and test where to make changes.

There are also other editors that might offer you the control you wish. TinyMCE is not WordPress as such but from a 3rd party.
