Put it in /wp-content/plugins/wp-downloadmanager/ will do

I’m quite sure I did everything right. Downloaded po/mo Files for German and put them in the directory plugins/wp-downloadmanager as they are.
is the translation also for the back-end? Because that would be the most important thing.
Is your WP in German too? When you say doesn’t work means both front end and backend?

In wp-downloadmanager.php
Find (line 35): load_plugin_textdomain('wp-downloadmanager', false, 'wp-downloadmanager');
Replace: load_plugin_textdomain( 'wp-downloadmanager', false, dirname( plugin_basename( __FILE__ ) ) );
