Can't import file Upload & directory not writable

After getting the header configuration to work i.e. matched up data to woocommerce fields – i thought I was onto a winner and it would work. but I got the following message when trying to import the file.
Could not upload file.
Also I’ve got following alert message
Upload directory is not writable, please check you permissions
I’ve tried changing the chmod values for the uploads directory and csvimport & woocommerce_uploads from 0755 to 0777 (i read this in a post in this forum). I’m a little cautious on this as it’s not secure. but tried them but got the same message ‘cant import and directory still unwritable
Can the developers tell me if these are the right directories and what CHMOD values should be and if you need to change it back straight after you’ve done the upload.
Are there any other issues – I’m on a multi-site installation.
