Nothing to map Meta: CSV column header to

I have managed to import products and variations of products using Woocommerce CSV importer however I need to add an additional field for an EAN number which is specific to each product. It must be displayed as EAN:************ in order for the Google trawler to recognise it. I do not want to add these as attributes as there are 1000’s of them.
I have attempted to import all EAN’s with the at the same time as the variations by including the data in a column headed meta:product-id in the hopes that this will import a custom field on the product page displaying the EAN. However I cannot get further than uploading the header as there is nothing to map the column to in woocommerce CSV importer.
How can I go about importing this vital data without spending hours adding each EAN as an attribute, I already have to do this for the dozens of size and colour variations!
Any constructive advise welcome.
