I still can’t get the comment box to go away — I went into settings and unchecked allow comments on new posts.
I don’t see any check box on the actual page inside WP.
Also, I asked a question on that thread and then was told by a moderator to start my own thread next time, and then they closed that thread.

Go to your home page (under Pages) and click on Quick Edit for that page – that should show a check box for “Allow Comments” – uncheck it.
