• Hi,

I’ve been doing a few updates to my site at http://www.copywritenow.co.uk lately, and eventually reverted to the Coraline theme with no real changes to anything. But lots of diamond question marks have appeared quite sporadically in my posts. I’ve searched for solutions, but these mostly relate to the charset, and these question marks aren’t appearing as replacement characters – they have most frequently appeared around italics, but even then only occasionally, and sometimes just at the opening HTML, sometimes at the close, sometimes both.

I’ve tried switching themes and altering the charset but these made no difference, I can’t find a reason for it, can anyone help? Thank you very much.

    Phil

  • Hi Phil,
It would be helpful if you could give a specific link where it is happening. I didn’t see it at all when I viewed your site, but generally this happens when you copy and paste text into the Visual editor. Try using the Text tab to go in and remove whatever text that is where those diamond question marks are and see if that helps.

    Hi Laura,

Thanks for looking – on this page: http://www.copywritenow.co.uk/ticking-cliche-boxes-original/ it appears near the italics and in one case after a full stop.

I haven’t been copying and pasting any text though, these have appeared in articles that I haven’t edited in months. And in some cases I have gone in and deleted the text and rewrote it and the question marks appeared again.

Hmmm, that’s strange because it definitely looks like the marks that I got from copy & pasting from photoshop. What I did is copy and paste the text out of the Text editor in WordPress into a plain text editor like Notepad. Then I was able to see those marks, delete them, and paste back in the clean text.
    Good luck!

Thanks Laura, I will try doing that to correct it, and hopefully that will work – but it is somewhat addressing the symptom and not the cause! Which is a shame because it will take me a long time to go through everything on the site and remove the errant question marks manually.
