Looking for some user related plugins

I’m currently in the process of setting up a community website where I want users to be able to register and maintain their profile on the front end of the website. This could be through e-mail/password or Facebook/Twitter. Additionally it would be nice if the users can send each other direct messages and earn badges for things they do such as commenting.

As an example of what I would like the Uproxx site deserves an honorable mention. It’s a WordPress-based site, but I have no idea if they have some plugins installed to take care of that functionality or if they have custom built the lot. Therefore I’m trying to ask around to see if people know of some plugins that could be used to achieve this.
