Use WP as CMS for static pages

Hi
I want to use WP as a CMS for the static pages. I need to know what would bee the best way to to do this. I found some tutorial that showed a way to build like customfildes, like if I have several different columns on one page I want to customize my CMS so that I can edit every text/column/Image ore whatever I want the client to be able to edit,by it self. Because standard is that there is only one text/area that I can update( the basic loop) and I need to be able to give the client ability to update more the one text area. I cant find that tutorial now , any help? What is the best way, and I do not want to use the html part of the editor, to big risk that the client will delete half the page and it dosnt work anyway so…
