Can't Login – 2 users with same Username
-
I changed my Admin username to the same username as a Contributor, and now I can’t access my Admin account. I sent a ‘forgot password’ email, and changed the password, but it still logs me in to the Contributor account.
I can log in to wordpress.com with my old username, but not my website, which is on wordpress.org.
How do I change my Admin username back so I can sign in?

Tara, I already know all about Roles.
My problem is, I changed my Admin username to the same username as a Contributor, and now I can’t access my Admin account.
I sent a ‘forgot password’ email, and changed the password, but it still logs me in to the Contributor account.
I think Tara is right but unless you can log in as another admin you won’t be able to fix it.
I can log in to wordpress.com with my old username, but not my website, which is on wordpress.org.
One has nothing to do with the others. Your WordPress.COM is independent from your WordPress.ORG account and both have nothing to do with your self-hosted WordPress installation.
All 3 accounts are disconnected from each other.
How do I change my Admin username back so I can sign in?
Try these instructions to create a new admin level account (don’t call it admin).

Once you have that new admin level account then login as that account and fix the original.
Before you do that make sure you’ve backed up the whole works first.

@lapanwebsite That video has some concerns. The version of WordPress is ancient (id WordPress years) and that’s not really the problem here (I think). The problem is that the old admin account has been somehow downgraded.
I missed that:”wordpress.com”.
Video is old, but it is good way, he is on wordpress.com, can’t do it.Jan, the steps involved to create a new Admin through Hostgator seem really complicated. I’m not very tech savvy. Can I hire you to do it for me?

The link posted by Jan Dembowski is by wpbeginner.com, try that one.
Tara, I clicked on the link. The steps involved are too complicated for me. I’m not tech savvy. That’s why I was asking Jan for help.
Here is some more info (Google search).
Just to be on safe side, backup everything a recommended by Jan Dembowski.
It’s… tricky. If you had a password issue then you could fix that by editing 1 line in your theme file and that would fix it. Usually.
But what I think (and I hope I’m wrong) is that somehow the admin level account got downgraded from Administrator level to Contributor (which is why I think that Tara is right).
There’s probably an easier way to raise that account back but the simplest is to login as another administrator level account and fix it that way.
How were you able to downgrade that account is what I’m wondering. Is there another admin level account you can use to fix it?
Edit: Oh and LapanWebsite? Thanks for helping out! That video wasn’t bad I was mostly just pointing out that it might not be correct here. 😉
Jan Dembowski, you are right. 🙂
This was confusing:”I can log in to wordpress.com with my old username, but not my website, which is on wordpress.org.”
Still, I dont know is he on wordpress.com, but as he mentioned hostgator, I guess he has access to database.

http://wordpress.org/support/topic/creating-wp-user-in-phpmyadmin?replies=5The website is hosted on Hostgator. I was the only Admin.
My Admin username was “allenc531”. I changed it to “tsto”, which was already being used by a Contributor. That means that there are now 2 users with the same username (tsto).
When I try log in with my old username (allenc531), it says ‘invalid username’. When I log in with “tsto”, I go to the other user’s account.
That means that there are now 2 users with the same username (tsto).
– First, make sure “tsto” does not have administrative priviledges, because, otherwise, “tsto” has access to your dashboard (unless you trust someone).
– Second, if you do not have another account to login, create a new admin level account (don’t call it admin).

Make sure to backup everything as recommended before.
