Me too, I have the same 404 and in webmaster tools
Disable author/user sitemap must be off so no able this box and it works, for me it works, don’t no if this is the solution for you, in the past it was check box on.

Both are working luckily. Can you please comment on what solved your issue and close this topic?

Thanks for checking out my sitemap. I have just logged onto webmaster tools and the error message is gone. What would have fixed the issue?

Getting the same thing:
The error is
“Sitemap is HTML
Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead.”

Just looking at this … aren’t we mixing up with the author-sitemap.xml.
Sitemap itself is OK but after some time, the message mentioned in this thread is related to the author sitemap. Disabling in Yoast doesn’t work.
no i get the issue disable author site map ticked but it still adds an author sitemap to the index.xml and the author sitemap goes directly to a webpage http://www.mysite.co.uk/author-sitemap.xml
