Eldenroot: I need to verify, but I have a suspicious we may indeed have broken this. There are a few shortcodes we just didn’t cover, and I think this was one of them. For the same reason, we don’t currently have this logic in our new Attach to Post interface.
You’re the second user to notify us on this.
It’s a priority for us to get old short codes working, so I’ll create an issue for this and give it relatively high priority.

I upgraded to 2.0 and have it working fine.
We display paintings and had changed the old version to say “images” instead of “photos” when displaying an album (it counts them and displays “15 photos”). Inspecting tells me its in nextgen_basic_album.css but of course that’s just what is displaying it.
I have poked around for awhile now and can’t find where that might be. I’m going back to the old version for now but will upgrade when you can point me in the right direction.
