• Howdy!

I’m trying to update to version 3.5.2 via the wp-admin UI, but am bombing out with the “There was an error connecting to the server, Please verify the settings are correct” message. I know that my username, password and IP are correct, as I can use the exact same credentials and establish an FTP session from my local machine (via FileZilla or something to that tune). I’ve tried most of the steps in this article, but to no avail.

Any other big stuff I might be missing? FWIW, I’m using the latest/greatest Ubuntu release.

  • Have you tried updating by uploading the wp files right to your ftp server, removing the need to go through the admin screen?

If you move ahead with that, make sure you don’t overwrite your /wp-content/ folder!!! And back it up first so you have a copy just in case.

Going to try that next, but I’m also running into this same issue with plug-ins. I’d rather not hand-update the 20+ plug-ins we’re running!

That’s all to do with server permissions. The user that’s running Apache has not been granted permission over the file system, so can’t make any changes (which are needed when installing/updating). If it’s your server you’ll need to look at it and get that sorted out. If it’s not your server then get the hosting company to look at this and they’ll be able to sort it out for you.
