Linking from the header

Some time ago I set up a header image on my site http://deconstructingcomics.com . Someone online showed me how to set it up as a non-repeating background image in the css file.

The problem with this approach is that I can’t link the header image to the home page, as is conventionally done…. can I? Seems like there must be a way — using an image map or something.

I’ve been procrastinating figuring out a fix for this, but I get some user complaints, so I need to solve this. Any suggestions would be appreciated. (Could I set up an image header in a more conventional way if I used a different theme?)
