• Suddenly the TinyMCE editor disapeared from the WP backend. I just get a blank textarea. It worked before, has nothing to do with the browser I’m using and I’m not sure if it appeared after the WP 2.0.2 update or before.

  • What do you mean it disappeared from the backend? Do you mean the admin area, or the files for TinyMCE have gone? (The backend is the software that runs on your server, in this case WordPress).

You can try clearing the cache and refreshing, or check your settings, they may have something to do with it. First, check under your profile to see if the rich text editor is enabled, and then check under Options > Writing to see if the “users should see the rich text editor” is enabled.

I’m assuming this is your own copy of WordPress, and that you aren’t a contributor or editor without admin access?

By ‘backend’ I mean the wp-administration area. All the boxes you mentioned are checked, I’m logged in as the administrator and therefore I should see the editor, but that’s not the case.

Right, ok, sounds like something’s gone a bit funny, did you recently upgrde or install a plugin, or anything like that?

Did you try clearing the cache, sometimes that can be the cause.

“Did you try clearing the cache, sometimes that can be the cause.”
    How can I do this?

When viewing the admin area, press ctrl+f5. Pressing f5 makes your browser refresh a page, but ctrl+f5 means it refreshes your page and overwrites the files in your cache.

If that doesn’t work, come back here 🙂

I thought you meant a server cache or some WP cache .. as I wrote before, it’s not the browser. I even tried it with different browsers (Firefox, Camino), but none of them displays the editor. Of course I installed some plugins in the meantime, but I can’t say which one could be responsible for the missing editor.

Try disabling all the plugins and enabling only one at a time, that will show you if one of them is causing the problem, then you can tell the author of that plugin about the bug.

If that doesn’t work, you can try combinations of plugins, but that’s when it starts to get complicated :/

No success. I disabled ALL plugins, but the editor still doesn’t show up. Could it help if I upload/overwrite some config files in the wp-include directory? I read about that in another context, but I’m not sure which file it was ..

It’s possible that something has gone wrong, yes. Re-uploading files might help.

Can I just check, are you seeing no formatting toolbar of any kind, or is there a basic one there?

If there’s nothing there, then I would imagine that re-uploading would help.

There’s nothing, only a blank textarea. Which files would you suggest to upload?

Let me see… try the wp-includes directory.

To be honest, I’m not entirely sure myself. There are a number of files that are involved.

It’s back! I started with the tinymce directory, uploaded it again and now the editor is back. Weired. Thanks for your help!

    Oh good 😀

Sometimes files are corrupted when they’re uploaded, so that might have been it.

    I’m glad it’s solved!

I had this same issue as well, but reuploading seemed to fix it.
