W3 Total cache and Better WP security

What is the trick to get these two to play together nice?
I had a horrible time installing W3 total cache, I had to deactivaye better WP security, alter my htts file, set permissions just to install W3. After I got it installed ok I activated BWPS and W3 basically quit working and had errors. What settings can I use in BWPS to let W3 do what it needs to do?
