  • Try:
    – switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

Thanks. I’m pretty sure 3.5.2 update went through alright. The site came back up after I did that update. It was when I upgraded the plugins that the problem arose.

There is no magic bullet in these situations. This is just the start of basic troubleshooting and is a process of elimination deliberately designed to locate the root cause as quickly as possible by first removing the most obvious and common culprits via a series of (often) temporary steps.

Do you want to locate and, hopefully, fix the problem on your site? If “yes”, then please help us to help you and carry out the changes that we suggest.

ummm… okay. I was making a simple observation… at any rate, thank you for your help. I will proceed through these to see if they solve the problem.

Okay, so resetting the plugins folder (putting “.hold” at the end of the folder name) got the admin screens back. How do I figure out which one is the problem? Thanks.

Rename the folder back to plugins and then re-activate the plugins one-at-a-time – checking that all admin screens are still OK after each re-activation. Eventually, the issue will re-occur but now you should know exactly which plugin is to blame. Deleting that plugin’s folder inside wp-content/plugins will then fix the problem.

When I rename the folder back to “plugins” the admin screens disappear again.

That is weird. Why did it post so many times? Sorry about that. At any rate, when I remove the word “hold” on the end of the folder the admin screen disappears again. Should I remove them one-by-one from the folder with it on hold, or…

Could you put all the plugin folders on hold, then rename the parent folder to ‘plugins’? What happens?

Good suggestion. I took the plugins folder off hold and put the Akismet plugin on hold (I’d had a suspicion that it was what was causing the problem). I then re-activated all of my plugins, and I’m good now. I guess I’ll delete Akismet and re-install.

    Awesome, glad it worked out.
