You’d probably be better off installing WordPress manually in a sub-folder off the root domain,

well, he wants the whole site to be through wordpress, so I thought it would be better/easier/etc. to just have wordpress in the root domain. will I be able to power the whole website through wordpress if it’s in a sub folder?
you should first try to remove the wordpress then reinstall it again in the root directory.try this
Just to be clear, you are not “moving” the current site to HostGator (HG) and WP; you will be re-building it at HG using WP … big difference π I can tell because the current site at the URL you provides shows that it is built using Yahoo! SiteBuilder/2.6/1.6.0_23.
So then, what URL are you trying to access your HG WP installation with? It will NOT be the URL you provided as that site up and running at it’s current location.
When you set up your hosting plan with HG, you must submit a domain name to use with it; which one is that? That will be the one you use to access the site, and adding /wp-login or /wp-admin after it will get you to the WP log in page.
If, however, you used the existing URL (the one here), then you will have to get HG to set up a temporary URL for you until you have the WP site setup and ready to switch over. That is another topic π

yes, the domain I have registered right now with HG is the one I listed earlier. There’s another forum on here http://wordpress.org/support/topic/installing-wordpress-to-replace-existing-website?replies=5 which pretty much explains exactly what my intention is. The only problem is that they all kind of assume that WordPress is already installed… which is the problem I’m having. So, 2ninerniner2, you’re saying that I need to contact HG and set up a temporary domain and do all the work in that and just switch it once I’m finished? Will that mess up his SEO standing at all? Thank you so far for all your help. I appreciate it.

It is … according to what you have said you have already done with the HG Fantastico de Luxe install. It’s just that you cannot access it yet because of the URL issue.

Yes

If you set it up with the same menu/page structure, content, etc. you should be fine. I not an “expert” on that and your ranking may suffer for a bit after the switch.
What you will need to do during the switch is use a plugin on the WP site such as http://wordpress.org/plugins/velvet-blues-update-urls/ to update all the internal links (menus, images, etc.) to the new URL (that is, from the temp URL to the current live one when it is switched to point to the WP/HG site). But make SURE you make a backup of the WP database before doing so! π
Google is an amazing thing! π
No need to contact HG for the URL … here is how to access your WP login:
http://your_account_IP_address/~cPanel_username/wp-admin
NOTE the tilde before the username!
You can find the IP address on the right sidebar when logged into the HG cPanel and well, you should already know the username π
I just tried this on one of my HG test accounts and it works like a charm … learn something new every day π

Thank you all for your support.
I tried to login with that method. It still came up with a 404 not found message, but this one was at least from the host gator site, so I knew I was getting closer. I ended up calling their help line. They told me that the site was still being routed to yahoo and that was screwing everything up. I set up a temp url and I’m building the site through that for now. I appreciate your patience. God bless you all and I’m sure I’ll be starting another topic on here within the next few days. I’m still learning.
