Sidebar not in the right place

im pulling my hair out here. I have just installed a new theme and i cant get the sidebar to sit on the side of the page it is always below the posts.

The side bar works properly when you goto a category page or a seprate page but wont work on the front page.

i have tested the theme on a test blog and it works fine just not this one… what the hell is going on??
