Can't upload via wordpress cms

Since adding the public uploader, we’ve found that we are unable to add images via the regular nextgen uploader in the cms. When we try, it says to check that it’s writable. If we turn public uploader off, everything uploads, no problem.

The majority of our galleries are created within the CMS, but we just want one that the public can upload to. Any ideas?
