[Plugin: NextGen} Image not writable error or memory limit err

Hello- I have a few wordpress site hosted on my godaddy account. Thru FTP I uploaded 100 photos (not that high res, 400-1000k) which NextGen can view and show, but they take forever to load and don’t display in slideshow.

When importing with NextGen from the ftp uploaded I receive a memory limit error and no thumbnails are created.

When I try to bulk resize I get the error that the .jpg is not writable.

STEPS I HAVE TAKEN:
There 20+posts related to this, but none have helped or are recent. I have altered the /wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/lib/gd.thumbnail.inc.php file to remove (remove the //) from before @ini_set(‘memory_limit’, ‘128M’);
as indicated in this guide ( http://www.visser.com.au/blog/thumbnail-generation-php-memory-limit-nextgen-gallery/ )

This did not help.

Resize images smaller (orig were 2mb now ~1mb or less)

No luck.

Peruse internet for hour plus.

No luck.
