• With almost 50,000 downloads of my Celestial Lite theme, I am considering completely recoding and redesigning this theme but my concern is that the amount of changes I plan to make will definitely affect all those who are using Celestial Lite. The changes are based on the complete redesign of my Pro version and I wanted to make it easier for a direct upgrade for anyone wanting to.

However, the concern is that there would be so many changes, including structure layout, and widget positions, etc., that it would definitely affect sites that use this theme.

Is there a way to inform people of the significant changes before they click to update in their dashboard, or should I submit this as a new theme?

Not as far as I aware.

or should I submit this as a new theme?

I think this might be your best option. You could call it something like “Celestial Lite Reloaded”.

    Celestial Lite Reloaded…that’s awesome 🙂

I’m thinking this could be the way to go as well because there’s just too many changes I want to do with the current one.

I know what you mean. I sometimes feel very constrained as to what I can and can’t change in some of my own WPORG themes. You want to change some area but you’ve also got the issue of supporting existing users & making sure that any updates don’t wreck (from their pov) their site.

A new theme is definitely the way to go. Does the existing version of Celestial Lite have its own settings/options page? If so, that would be a great place to point your existing users towards the reloaded version with a view to perhaps scaling back support for the original version.

Exactly… the last thing I want to do is upset those using my theme(s) with changes.

The Celestial Lite does have its own theme options (using the WP customizer).

The Celestial theme is actually a year old from when I first created it and it was also the first time I did a responsive theme, the first time using Bootstrap, and the first time using the Customizer, among other things. But after a year, I decided I could do a lot better with it by giving it a fresh new update and streamline the code.

Already from the work I’ve done so far, I’m very excited with the changes and so far I’ve reduced the code by 40%.

Are you plugging directly into the customizer or do you have an options page under the Appearance menu?

Not quite sure what you mean by plugging in…do you mean as a plugin? If so, no, it’s coded in and accessible off the home dashboard, plus the theme’s page, as well the Appearance menu.

do you mean as a plugin?

Sorry – no. Just confirming that you had an Appearance -> Theme Options page. I use that page in my themes to both provide additional theme documentation (I went a bit overboard on post formats in one theme) and provide links to pre-made child themes as well as actually allowing people to configure the theme’s settings. I think it’s a great way to communicate directly with your users and, providing you’re not pointing to something spammy or trying to nag people too much, it shouldn’t fall foul of any of the the theme review guidelines.

Definitely a good place to promote the reloaded theme. You could also update the original theme’s description in style.css to mention the reloaded version and that will also appear on the theme’s page in the Repo.

Thanks for the follow up and additional note about the suggestion.
