You could certainly do that with Events Manager – by creating a “Featured” event category.

thanks Phil but after i create the category, how do i get it into the sidebar?
in case i’m not being real clear.
i want an excerpt of the featured event to appear in the sidebar with a thumbnail image
not just the category name “featured event”
am i making sense? lol
If you add the Events widget to your sidebar, by default you’ll get a list of all events. To narrow it down to just your featured category, change the category ID in the widget settings to the ID of your featured category.

The widget I mentioned can do this for you. What happens when you try it? Why isn’t it working for you?
well, because what I want is the ability to go to my events list, select an event to be featured, And have it show up in the sidebar with a thumbnail image.
when i tried it with the categories list the image was not showing up and yes, i added the event image placeholder to the code.
after trying @phil suggestion,
1.
use events widget at WP Appearance > widget > events widget then enter/add x in Category IDs where x is your event categories id
2.
use shortcode like [events_list category=”x”] where x is your event categories id and then install wp plugin which allows you to use shortcode in text widget
you want to add an events widget, there you can alter the format and limit the list to certain categories.
alternatively use shortcodes in a text widget like
[events_list category=”featured”]#_EVENTNAME #_EVENTIMAGE{50,50}[/events_list]
