    how do you make a post shorter when be viewed on the main page? like have a read more link type deal.

    Just insert the “more” tag where you want to break the text.
    If you use the wysiwyg editor hover on the buttons above the write area to find it.

    If you use the “normal” editor, just type in the text <!--more-->
