Custom fields mysteriously appearing

    today 14 custom fields appeared what seems like today. several questions

    1) how many fields are allowed. a very important field that was on bottom of list no longer appears, might have been bumped off.

    2) if being hacked, just thinking worse case, where do custom fields reside so i can monitor this issue, the theme or wordpress. not sure where to look.

    3) can custom fields be added without going through a post. i could look at posts that have been revised recently.

    4)who can add a custom field. can a contributor? would look at my user window and see who’s posting.

    found out how to add more fields that can be shown and found a playing with a plugin called ‘delete custom fields’ and found out that custom fields can only be added when someone writes a post. still irksome not knowing where the fields came from.
