According to the video at the bottom of http://p2theme.com/, there is a specially optimized version of P2 for smartphone use.
Any ideas where I can find it?

An optimized version of P2 is automatically activated when browsing from an iPhone, but the theme is not currently optimized for other smartphones.

I’m assuming the use of the apps at http://wordpress.org/extend/mobile/

would be required?

Nope! The theme is not really related to the WordPress mobile apps.
