you can change your displayed name by editing your profile here but usernames are not changeable. If you need a new username, you’d need to create a new account.

Thanks for the quick reply semi but if you’ll read my original question, I CAN NOT change my display name. I’ve tried 20 times and it never saves … Actually, all I want to do is add my last name but I can’t even do that.
You mean like “Ed Wait”? You hadn’t actually selected that as your display name. 🙂

Ok. let me clarify this. I’m not talking about HERE at wordpress.org.. I mean on my website that’s running wordpress as a self hosted blog/website. When I go to the dashboard on my website, It won’t let me add my last name/change any info there.

I go to my dashboard on my website. Under “users” I select my profile (the only one there)
Next I “edit” it.
I add my first name & last name under the “username”.
Then I select my new display name and hit save.
but it never saves.
I’ve even tried to “save” it before selecting the new display name and go back after the save is complete but the new display name is never saved.
Ahhh! I’m sorry. I misunderstood! But having said that, you should be able to do exactly the same thing in your profile page on your site.

Can you complete and save the First name and Last name fields in your profile?

Yes, I can enter my first and last name but it never saves when I hit the save button.
Hmm… Can you replicate the problem using the default 2012 theme with all plugins deactivated?
