Having only one page

I created a new page and modified it and deleted the sample page. I now have my new page only, but have on the menu/button bar listed a home page and my new page, and they both look the same. When you click edit on the home page it says that you can’t edit becaue you’ve thrown it in the trash. How would you go about displaying only one page?
