Shortcodes not working

Hi

Sorry if this has been reported before, but I couldn’t find a post describing this problem as I see it.

When trying to use a shortcode to embed a youtube video or other media on my WP page the shortcode doesn’t work. WP only shows the plain text shortcode with the link to the youtube video. Eg. ‘[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaNH56Vpg-A]’ Only when pasting the direct address of the Youtube video the transformation would work (without shortcode) and I see the youtube window. Eg. ‘http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaNH56Vpg-A’

I’ve tested a few of the available shortcodes offered by WP and none of them work (youtube, blip.tv, ted, flickr, soundcloud, spotify, etc).

Interestingly the shortcode for the Contact Form 7 Plugin works fine. Also the issue is reproducible in three different themes I tried (Responsive, Twenty Eleven, Twenty Twelve).

As I understand in WP version 3.5.1 (which I am using) there is no option to turn on or off the shortcodes because it’s turned on by default.

I am using a few Plugins, but the behaviour doesn’t change if I turn them all off. Still the shortcodes would not work.

To me this looks like a bug in WP 3.5.1. But I am wondering why nobody else has reported this issue.

Can anyone confirm the issue? Is there a solution for it around?

You need one of the shortcode plugins below:

The shortcodes are supposed to work out of the box: http://en.support.wordpress.com/shortcodes/

Just tested now and it’s not working on my sites either. Only the direct URL works. Maybe that documentation is outdated or this feature was removed from WordPress.

I am using WP 3.5.1

The shortcodes are supposed to work out of the box: http://en.support.wordpress.com/shortcodes/

Perhaps the shortcode format is only for WordPress.com not WordPress.org?

@triptripper, yes, I think you are right! Didn’t notice that the documentation is from WordPress.com. As I know WordPress.org itself never had shortcode, so had to use plugins instead.

Well guys, it looks you are right. Although wordpress.COM is based on wordpress.ORG technology it seems that they have developed their own fork. Too bad, because the shortcodes from wordpress.COM are so elegant.

I now achieved what I wanted to and that was embedding a youtube video in a size I can specify myself. That is possible by using the old embed code from youtube. Goto the youtube video -> click share -> click embed -> click use old embed code -> copy, modify and insert the code into your page.

As mentioned by SelfHostedWP.com this job can also be done using plugins. I jsut tend to avoid installing plugins wherever possible.

Yes, .COM and .ORG are not interchangeable, as .COM has customized many features for users there who have no access to code/plugins, etc. In general, don’t use .COM support docs for .ORG sites :).

In my case it was “Autopimize” plugin that was causing trouble. Solution: either disable it or uncheck Optimize JavaScript Code option.

Now the videos are displayed and can be played as embedded.
