Thumbnail archive with pagination

I’ve had a look at the plugins which can do this, but none of them do it how I need it to look. At the moment on my site I have an “archive” page which just shows thumbnails of older posts using a short code.

I’ve found a site that implements what I’m going for, which can be seen here: http://i.imgur.com/yzVZTtj.jpg

There is pagination at the bottom which I’m guessing generates a new page when the current page is full, so far I am struggling to create anything like that. Any ideas? : )
