Database Error

    God I feel like a moron. Okay, I have two WP blogs, one of which I never use and I noticed recently got totally spam bombed, so I was deleting one, and I accidently started deleting files from the one I actually use, and lost my wp-config.php file (I know, I’m an idiot)

    I have the replacement file, I snagged the one from the other blog, the one I was meaning to delete, but I can’t remember what the settings where. I figured, since the databases has similar names (azpnet_wrdp1 & azpnet_wrdp2) that the settings would be exactly the same except for that one number, yet I still get get it back. I’ve tried every name and password I’ve ever used since having the domain, and still no workie. Blog #1, the one I don’t use, was using Wp 1.01, where as Blog #2 is using the latest version. Not sure if that has any significance.

    Is there a way I can check and find out what my settings are? I mean, I got them the first time, right?

    Okay, seems my username and password are fine, it’s the database name that’s the trouble.

    I’m looking at the Cpanel MySQL page right now, and it’s telling me that the datebase name is azpnet_wrdp2, but that’s not working. I tried just wrdp2, no such luck.

    I’ve had a lot of cases where the database name and username are the same – especially in cases where I’ve used Fantastico to install.

    Try that, see what happens. If it doesn’t work, create a new database user and password, add the new user to the database, then try it again.

    Sorry, edited my post on you there. The username and password are fine (I took your suggestion and made a new user account) but the datebase name seems to be the error.

    Well…. hmmm. Do you have an email from the cpanel when you first installed it? Or am I the only one in the world that has every email she’s received in the last 10 years?

    Failing that…. do you have a current backup of the database? If so, you can just create a new database, reinstall wp, drop the database tables, and import the database dump.

    Assuming the same versions of course. If it’s different versions, you can still do it, it’s just several more steps.

    Then again…. the mysql screen should be showing you exactly WHAT databases are available, and what their exact names are….

    I don’t recall EVER getting an email from Cpanel, and I save all my emails too… but then again I co-own the domain with a friend, and it’s under her name, so she probably got the email instead of me. If one was sent out at all, I don’t recall ever getting emails like that from any other domains I’ve owned in the past.

    I guess I could reinstall it, I’m concerned I’ll lose all my posts though, since I’m not sure how to back up my database. According to Cpanel though, the database name is azpnet_wrdp2, and for some reason it’s just not working.

    Is there a way to rename the database? I could try that.

    Kay, seems I can’t edit my posts anymore, but my Database name is definately correct. I am out of ideas.

    Omg. Okay. I got really, really, REALLY lucky, and found a back-up copy of the old wp-config file hidden away from last year. I would never have figured this out on my own.

    PS: I still don’t know what the problem was, since the database names are the same. Hopefully this doesn’t happen to anyone else.

    I just posted a little while ago and now I wonder if our issues are related. My blog seems to keep spontaneously changing since i posted! First i couldn’t log in at all and nothing showed. Then it showed but w/o styles (said the styles werde broken), replaced it with default… it come, its goes, it’s all very weird and unstable. I do know that all my files are intact.

    devynci: I aplogize for disappearing last night – lost power for several hours in the middle of the only snowstorm we’ve really had this year; glad you’re back in business!

    jrotem: I don’t know that this will help at all, but using cpanel, access the mysql databases screen, and click “Repair” next to the database you’re using. Sometimes that helps…. you occasionally get whacko results if various tables are overheaded or otherwise wonky.

    How can you change the database in cpanel?, I have added a new user to the wp-config.php and can now access the database but in cpanel it does not recognize the new user so I can not back up the DB from there.

    Hope this makes sense.

    First thing, go to your main cpanel screen, click on Change Password, do so, then try again. If it’s still not allowing you access, then you’ll have to contact your host and get them to reset and resend your password.

    Funny thing is, well it is really not funny but after I added the new user to database I had momentary access to my blog, then phpMyAdmin would not allow me access as I wanted to back up everything but could not gain access to phpMyAdmin.

    I have contacted my host for a reset although I was able to reset the masterpassword but the phpMyAdmin still denies access. I suppose I can try adding a new user again. I have no idea why the new user worked for about ten minutes then errored out again?

    I have added another user and now have regained access to my blog, I am not going to try to access the database through cpanel as that is when it went goofy in phpMyAdmin. Can I back up the db another way?

    Um. Couple things: some cpanels have a backup option (I think it backs up EVERYTHING, but that would be better than NOTHING!)

    If this is 2.0.2, use the available backup plugin – but SET THE PERMISSIONS BACK TO NORMAL WHEN DONE!

    Or ask your host to backup the database and stuff the .sql file in a file in your public_html folder.

    Oh – and if you’ve done a fantastico upgrade, accessing your site using an ftp client should allow you to access the main root (above public_html) where you should see a folder named fantastico_backups, within which is a tgz file that should have an .sql database dump inside it.
