This actually requires php 5.3.3, not 5.2.x as stated here by author! DANGER — upgrade does not warn, so borks previously working installs!! See thread here: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/s3?replies=10#post-3913329

The readme file has just been updated from:

WordPress 3.2 and PHP 5.2.6 required! To use the Plugin with full functionality PHP 5.3.3 with mysqli

to:

WordPress 3.2 and PHP 5.2.6 required! To use the Plugin with full functionality PHP 5.3.3 with mysqli, FTP,gz, bz2, ZipArchive and curl is needed. Plugin functions that don’t work will be not displayed.
