  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    Hi Esmi,

Errm, did you read my post? The things there are what actually did something.

What is the default theme? There is twenty Eleven and Twenty Twelve available here, inter alia.

I’ve been fussing with this for 2 1/2 days for which I get nothing. Totally unproductive. Too many things done to no avail. I did change themes which terrified me But it recovered gracefully so i learned from that.

Did you try those standard troubleshooting steps as suggested? The current default theme is twentytwelve.

    Hi Esmi,

This site had Twenty Twelve theme running but it was ‘broken’ then. It seems that the only way the site owner was able to get an image into a post was by means of an external link. There is no evidence of any images being added to pages or posts by any other means.

When I went to activate TwentyTwelve , WordPress discouraged me strongly .
The screen message is “Are you sure you want to do this? Please try again. ”

    OK,
    Tony

    Hi WPyogi,

Having told him what I had done I copied the instructions to the owner of the host site. He is much more aufait with server side stuff than I am, which I am not. I was given the message that he unplugged and replugged the site.
Its a bit tricky to be absolutely specific about the time frame because there are three of use working on the problem at the simultaneosly ; I think this is the actual sequence.
1 Add Media button not working , not active. Dead.
    2 I deactivated Jetpack.
    3 extra CSS formatting gone
4 Add Media Button working again, Yay.
5 Owner ‘unplugged and replugged’ the site
6 site still without extra formatting
    7 I downloaded/activated Jetpack
8 Found that site was back where it was, formatting OK, but Add Media button not working again. !!

OK I had a go at activating TwentyTwelve but got the serious warning and decided not to proceed. Well, Its not going to burst into flames, I’ll do that.

Either you have a bad plugin or someone has been editing the 2010 theme. Please follow the steps I outlined above – checking Add Media after each step. The current default theme is 2012.

Right. I’ve activated TwentyTwelve, no problem, no warnings. No change to the Add Media button and the Insert Slideshow buttons , both not working.
That is where it is now. Broken.

    And the other steps?

    (@tonymoody)

    Thanks esmi,

2012 theme started now, as is, out the box. Add Media and Insert Slideshow button not active.

I’m checking the Add Media button after every change. (that should be in all capitals. G)

Jetpack was deactivated, site was unplugged and plugged in again and Jetpack was reactivated/updated, and CSS editing facility was thenavailable without me having to re-activate CSS.

I haven’t had anything to do with uploading/activating Slideshow other than look at what it does. I’ll see if I can deactivate it. Will check what other Plugins there are.

Akismet is whining that it needs final info. Could that be the cause?

    OK,
    Tony

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins?

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin?

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress?

Problem solved. It was caused by Flashcard Plugin. Version 0.1 | By Liang Shao |

    I did :
Akismet Deactivate = No change to Add Media button
Flashcard Deactivate = Add Media button working
Akismet Activate = Add Media button still working

    THANK YOU ESMI AND WPYOGI.

    OK,
    Tony

Urgg this flashcard plugin or something like it is required.
Will try : Delete and reinstall the flashcard plug in .
