• Hi, I’m pretty technically unsavvy. I’ve spent hours on my website KathleenKern.net doing stuff that I’m pretty sure it would have taken others about 15 minutes to do. Anyway, I added a second page today for a previous novel, panicked when I saw it had supplanted my static front page, spent several hours until I figured out through the quick edit feature that I could order the pages so that my front page is first and the new page is second. But now after several hours, I have still not figured out how to change the permalink that is to the right of “Home” under the header on the front page and automatically takes people to the new (second) page devoted to the previous novel. I’ve run searches on Word Press forums and seen there’s something called a home menu, but I can’t find anything like that under Appearance on the Dashboard.

  • Hi Kathleen,

The area you’re referring to is called the Nav Bar or Nav Menu.

Go into your WordPress Dashboard (the area you’re in after logging in), and hover your mouse pointer over the Appearance option, which is in the menu on the left-hand side.

A second menu should pop up, find the Menus option and click it. That should take you to the Menu Editor.

Enter a new menu name where it says “Enter new menu name here”, and click the blue Create Menu button, to create a new menu. Now, see to the left of that, where it says “Theme Locations”? On the drop down box, choose your new menu and click Save.

Now you can edit your menu to be how you want. You can insert links to Pages and Categories, but the most useful feature is the “Custom Links” box, letting you create links to wherever you want.

Don’t worry, it sounds like you’ve got the most important trait when it comes to making a website – determination. Let me know how it goes!
