I would space out the items at the very top.
I would add left & right margin/padding for the content.

I actually like the stuff at the top in the sky blue area. So, it’s a subjective “taste” thing. Yes, they could be spaced out a little better, but I like the overall theme.
I don’t really see it as “theme” – there is nothing in the stylesheet: it’s just a bare text as it would be if you go to see the /yourblog/wp.php file in pre-2.x versions 🙂
It’s all CSS actually…it’s just referring to a different directory for the style sheet. http://shinygavel.com/wp-content/themes/basic/design/styles/default/screen.css
