Get Category In Plugin

    Hi

    I am writing a plugin , the first basic step is for me to find which category the current page is , wether this be the archive page or the post page.

    I have tried as much as i can but nothing is working.. Any ideas ?

    do i need to go into a hook if so which one?

    So all im looking for the category name , or id i need this on the archive page or the single post page
