• Hi,
I’ve had this problem almost from the beginning after I set up my website a few months ago. Occasionally parts of either the home page or one of the subpages disappear. It seemed, however, that other people could see those pages flawlessly (or it didn’t work for others but for me)… usually, however, everything was working again a few minutes/hours later. Now the home page again doesn’t show everything (though it did yesterday) and two subpages haven’t worked for several days (though they may have worked inbetween … haven’t checked that often).
I haven’t checked all subpages, but all the others I checked do work okay.

Things that are missing on all three mentioned pages:
    – that bar at the top where you get into the dashboard
    – the footer (I’m using Twenty Eleven)
Additionally on the home page one NextGen Gallery Widget at the sidebar and the Smashwords Book Widget that shows my ebooks are missing (while one NextGen Widget is still there)
(I don’t have a sidebar on any other page – just the home page – so don’t know if it would work elsewhere)
The content does show on the home page – it’s only text.
Additionally on the two subpages the content is entirely missing, only the title shows up (content is in both cases only NextGen gallery/album thingos – no text)

I don’t dare deactivating plugins because (excuse me if I’m stupid) I don’t know if I can get them back with all content by simply activating them again or if everything would be lost – that would be a major catastrophy because I have tons of photos on my website.

I did do a backup shortly ago – I think … I downloaded everything via FileZilla … BUT unfortunately I had not checked if every page was working, so I’m not sure if this backup would help.

    My website is http://www.sophiadeluna.com
The subpages that aren’t working are:
    http://www.sophiadeluna.com/index.php/nuremberg/
    and
    http://www.sophiadeluna.com/index.php/winter/

Does anyone have an idea as to what could be the problem and how I could fix it?

    Thanks in advance,
    Sophia

This gets weirder and weirder …
This morning all pages worked again. Now, the home page is still working but the two above mentioned subpages are back to showing no content.
    ?????

I still have the same problem with the same pages as in my first post.
Is there no one here who has an idea how to fix this?
    Please, help if you can.
    Thank you.

    The problem is still ongoing.
And while formerly things were only not working for a short time, it’s now been about a week that the affected sites haven’t been working properly.
    Please, could someone help?

Try redoing the pages with problems. For instance the URL above for Winter does not have any text or images as content other than the title ‘Winter’.

What do you mean with ‘redoing’?

And… I just did that error search with Firefox and it says it’s a jquery error (Type error:jQuery (…).htm. (…) dialog is not a function) … and the indicated line says:

    .dialog({autoOpen: false, modal: true, zIndex: 10000, title: ‘Subscribe to this blog’});

    (@sophia-deluna)

    Hm … I really don’t understand this …
    I dit that error search again with the ‘Nuremberg’ subpage which is neither showing admin bar nor content (just the title) … the error was the same as the other day, with the indicated line being: .dialog({autoOpen: false, modal: true, zIndex: 10000, title: ‘Subscribe to this blog’});
So … I copy-pasted the whole shebang into a Word document.
Then I opened one of the subpages that do work … no error is shown in the error search … I opened the source code (rightclick show source code … hope this is the right translation as I get all this in German) … and I copy-pasted all into another Word document.
Then I copied the line that was indicated as error from the first document and pasted it into search to search for it in the other document (from the functioning page) and the weird thing is: the line is exactly identical.

Now … how can it be that this line in the source code is causing an error on one subpage while not causing any problems on another subpage? It is the exact same line!

    I really don’t get it.

Does anybody know how to solve this puzzle?

Can you deactivate all plugins and revert to an unedited copy of Twenty Eleven and see if you still face problems? You can always return to your current plugins and theme. You will not lose database or images.

BTW, it seems, you are using a modified copy of Twenty Eleven theme. If so, you should not have edited/modified the original theme, but created a child theme.

    Hi Krishna,
Well, I only modified things that were easy to modify with the provided settings … I didn’t fiddle with the code or anything … and I only learned that one should have a child theme after I had set up the website – unfortunately.

Hoping that you are right that I won’t lose database or images, I will try deactivating all plugins later (gotta go in a few minutes).
But what shall I do with the theme? Since I don’t have a child theme … How would I revert to an unedited copy without losing my database/images?

    I greatly appreciate your help!
    Thank you!

As I said, you will not lose your posts/pages, etc. and all the other work done by you because they are stored in your database. The images are stored separately. By changing your theme you will not lose them. However, as a matter of caution, you may make backups so that you can always reinstall the current version of your site.
In case you like to retain the modified theme that you are using now, you can save it separately or just add something like -old. Later you can convert it to your child theme.
Unedited copy of the theme can be downloaded from http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/twentyeleven

Ok … I think I found the culprits.
On the Home page the Smashwords Book Widget is causing the problems (while it does not cause problems with the Nuremberg subpage)
On the Nuremberg subpage wp-greet causes the problems, (while it does not cause problems with the Home page.)

Obviously these two plugins are causing problems on some pages but not on all. Both plugins are the newest versions.

    What can I do now?
(Do you think I still need to try the theme change? I’m still afraid of that and I don’t really know how to do that either.)

Look for better alternatives to those two plugins.

    Thread Starter Sophia DeLuna

    (@sophia-deluna)

I don’t think there is another alternative for the Smashword plugin, and I haven’t found a better alternative for the wp-greet either.
Furthermore, I can’t believe that these plugins are so very bad. They both used to work fine. There have always been phases when everything worked like a charm – and both plugins were active from the start. Also, they do work with most of the subpages, so there must be a reason why they are causing problems to only some of the pages.

I would rather find and fix the bug.

They may have compatibility problems with the current version of WP:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/smashwords-book-widget/

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-greet/

Unless the developer updates them, you’d probably need to hire someone to look into the code problems: http://jobs.wordpress.net/

Um … I still have WP 3.4.2 because I don’t dare updating it because I don’t have a child theme and I’m afraid everything will be lost. And also because I don’t know if the plugins would still work with the new version.

With this version (3.4.2) the plugins did all work at first, and after that they still worked most of the time with an occasional day or so intermittendly where they didn’t. Why they don’t work with some of the pages any more at all now, I can’t fathom.

Perhaps I could ask the support of these plugins … I’ll try that
